The daily city life of average Americans was shifting throughout the 1920s due to extra time for leisurely activities. Americans now received higher wages and shorter working hours, causing this free time. For example, the movie industry boomed as more people went to enjoy these silent films. Additionally, the phonograph and radio became widely known and desired which helped to make a standardized culture. The 1920s were also called the Golden Age of Sports because Americans became very involved and interested in them. Babe Ruth was a famous sports hero known for his home runs. Furthermore, Jazz became a new and popular category within music that was introduced by African Americans. This music exhibited African American experiences and was improvised when performed. Jazz allowed African Americans to gain respect within American society. All of these factors played a role in the development of a national culture. Therefore, the city lifestyle of typical Americans changed throughout the 1920s because of extra time that allowed for enjoyable activities.
