During the 1920’s, a new religious approach to Christianity emerged that challenged the modern ways of society. Fundamentalism focused on Protestant teachings and the total belief that everything said in the Bible was the absolute truth. Fundamentalists looked to the Bible with every important question they had in life, as they believed their holy book held all of the answers. Although this new movement proved as a beneficial way of life for some, it also led to conflict with the rest of society. The ideals of Fundamentalism clashed with those of Modernism due to the great difference in beliefs and methods of thinking. One example of this incompatibility was the topic of the theory of evolution developed by Charles Darwin. Darwin represented the modern portion of society, and explained logically that all living things evolved from something else. However, this clashed with the idea displayed in the Bible that every living thing was placed on earth by God. Furthermore, this dispute went farther than just disagreement when the American Civil Liberties Union persuaded John Scopes, a high school teacher, to challenge Tennessee’s new law against teaching Darwin’s theory, but was arrested for doing so. His case in court, where he was found guilty, became known as the Scopes Trial. Therefore, the introduction of Fundamentalism into society clashed greatly with the ideas of the modern world.
